Marshall Jay Root March 1, 1944–January 26, 2023 Marshall was the only child born to Herbert Lorne Root and Evelyn W. Root (Mayberry), in Cambridge, MA, on March 1, 1944. His early years were lived in the town of Malden and later Marblehead, MA. He collected stamps, rocks and snakes in his youth, and found great adventure in the nearby woods, Green Street Fields, building rafts and making his own bows and arrows. Early in his life he was found to have “relative pitch”, where he could pick out pretty much any tune that he heard on whatever instrument was at hand. He first started on the Ocarina, playing any tune that his younger brother requested during the long winter nights while living for a time in Maine, with his grandparents. His talents also extended to drawing, where he would create his own comic strips with stories and his own characters. Through much of his life he would engage his artistic skill in either drawing or sketching, at which he showed very good ability. As he got older he was attracted to writing as another expression of his creative skills.Though not published (except in the high school anthology) he could spend hours writing and editing. As an adult he was a drummer in all genres of music, despite never having had a lesson. In the early sixties he was a studio musician in Hollywood, working for a small studio on Hollywood Blvd., that adjoined a studio of The Ventures. As his skills as a drummer developed he found himself drawn to jazz drumming, and was in several jazz bands up and down California. That evolved back to rock bands, with a short stint with the Broadway Blues Band of Santa Cruz, and going on tour with a couple of rock bands. He can be heard on some early tunes of the blind singer, Tom Sullivan, on the album of, “If You Could See What I Hear”. He lived many years in Santa Cruz, playing in various bands, and later moving to McMinnville, OR, again playing in many bands, in particular The Jake Blair band. Any description of Marshall without reference to his humor would be to leave out a major part of who he was. It would be hard to have any conversation with him without at least two to a dozen jokes or bits of humor. It could be quite distracting, but quite funny, challenging you to ever get to your point of the conversation. Very often one would find themselves completely off topic, or more likely joining him in his “ridiculousness”. From bits that he’d made up to a truly unique take on the current events at hand, including his take on what “NASA” stood for after the Challenger disaster. He is survived by his son, Desmond (Dez) Root, of East Haven Ct., and a grandson, Ian. And a daughter , Jennifer Root (Kevin Newhouse), of Aptos, CA, and a brother, Richard Ponce (Maria) of Castroville, CA. A memorial service will be held this April 22, at 2:00 p.m., at the home of his brother, 15002 Castroville Blvd., Castroville, CA. Donations in Marshall’s memory may be made to any homeless person, on any corner in your community.
