Forget Starbucks and its venti, grande what have you—that’s just piling on the existing vernacular. Something as basic as milk can be steamed, foamed or frothed. And even though all three are technically foamed, pedantics will happily discuss the differences (size of the bubbles, for one). But first we might want to decide whether we are talking about whole, low fat, soy, almond, oat…How is it possible to keep things simple? Paris Bakery has found a way. While steamed milk lends a creamy feel to lattes and mochas, it is also a warm, calming pastime of its own, with the assistance of a little flavoring. A vanilla steamer is as untroubled as it gets. The soothing velvet of warm, steamed milk forms a mellow background for vanilla syrup and a dusting of cinnamon to loll effortlessly—a combination that wanders through time and memory, becoming ever more comfortable with each sip. It’s the taste of a favorite cookie from childhood. Steamed heat makes milk sweeter and more opulent on the palate, but not as weighty as many winter warmers. Where a froth vanishes, the airy lilt provided by the steaming process allows the soft blanket of vanilla to fall over your senses before slipping away. A sip is an embrace, but a fleeting one. For all the coziness offered by a steamer, there is nothing necessarily remarkable. It’s milk, flavored syrup and dry spice.
